There is this cool email assistant called Sandy that was pretty neat, but I never really used it, I had an account and thought it was a good idea but just never got around to using it.
Turns out the company that wrote Sandy got bought and the service is closing down.
So what happens next? You guessed it ... someone started an open source project to fill the void. It's called sandysback (blog).
I'm looking forward to seeing what these guys come up with, I see identi.ca support being mentioned in the blog, something Sandy didn't (and probably wouldn't) support. I love this kind of stuff because people will go out and write cool stuff and evolve it around other services, probably to a point where it will become useful for me instead of just being another "neat" service on the web.
For example, I use Tracks as my todo list; imagine integrating your task list with new Sandy and being able to just have new Sandy schedule your Todo on Tracks and then having her send you reminders, etc. etc. And since they're both open there is no reason why someone couldn't do this. Better yet are the yet unthought of ideas that will start to come along once it gets rolling.
So looking back to when identi.ca and other services started up people (myself included) tended to blow it off as "big deal, it's just a web service, I don't care if it's Free or not."
So yeah, this Sandy thing and Pownce closing down is starting to convince me on this whole AGPL thing ... I don't think I'll be giving up my gmail any time soon though. :)
(via Planet Ubuntu) Tracks looks great, I will have to check it out.
It's too bad evolution-data-server is not better documented and doesn't have mature bindings or something...it would be nice to access the same data from the desktop at home and via the web from elsewhere.
